HWC Youth Challenge

Dear Hawkeye Wrestling Club Challenge participant-

We would like to thank you for your interest in the HWC youth tournament on April 20th. We were approached with the idea to have a tournament by USA wrestling in an attempt to make the weekend of the Olympic Team Trials a family experience.

The Hawkeye Wrestling Club has always wanted to hold a tournament of this kind and we thought this would be a great platform to launch a tournament that we could hold for many years to come. However, we were faced with some unforeseen obstacles in the process. The lack of hotel space in Iowa City and the tournament being on a school day has caused the registration numbers to be very low.

We feel with the low number of participants registered for the tournament and only two weeks left, we have no choice but to cancel the youth tournament. This was not an easy decision to make but we felt we couldn’t run the type of tournament we wanted to with the low numbers. Many families are traveling a long distance and spending a lot of money to come to a tournament where their son or daughter would wrestle plenty of matches against good competition. We feel this would not be a good experience for the wrestlers, parents or fans that come.

The Hawkeye Wrestling Club is sorry for any inconvenience that this has and or will cause you and your family. We certainly don’t want to upset anyone but feel that canceling the tournament is a better option than having a small tournament where parents and participants don’t feel like their time and money was worth the trip.

Thanks for your understanding –
Tim Grissel
